There is an upward trend in invention patent applications filed with Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) in the recent 3 years. There are 45,650 cases filed in 2019, an annual increase of 2.6%. Invention patent applications filed with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have grown for 10 consecutive years. There are 265,800 applications by estimate in 2019, an annual increase of 5.2% (see Fig. 1).<\/p>\n
Applications filed by domestic\/foreign applicants keep growing in the last 3 years as well. 18, 294 applications were filed by domestic applicants in 2019, a proportion of 40.1%; while there are 27, 356 applications filed by foreign applicants, a proportion of 59.9% (see Fig. 2). The Japanese took the first place among the foreign applicants, followed up by the American and Chinese; the numbers of applications of these three countries have grown up. Due to a significant growth of 10.6% of applications filed by Chinese with WIPO, Chinese become the first in WIPO in terms of applicants\u2019 nationality, surpassing the American and Japanese.<\/p>\n
In terms of technical fields, applications filed with TIPO in the field of \u201csemiconductor\u201d dominate the first for the last 5 years, a proportion of 11.6% in 2019, followed up by \u201ccomputing technology\u201d, \u201celectro-mechanical energy device\u201d and \u201coptics\u201d. Applications of \u201ccomputing technology\u201d rank the first in WIPO, followed by \u201cdigital communication\u201d and \u201celectro-mechanical energy device\u201d, \u201csemiconductor\u201d and \u201coptics\u201d are the 9th<\/sup> and 10th<\/sup> respectively.<\/p>\n Except for Germany and Hong Kong, applications of \u201csemiconductor\u201d are included in the top 3 technical fields filed by major countries (regions) with the TIPO. Among these major countries, applications filed by Japan, the U.S. and South Korea are mostly in the field of \u201csemiconductor\u201d; Taiwan, China and Hong Kong are in the field of \u201ccomputing technology\u201d and Germany is in the field of \u201corganic precision chemistry\u201d (see table 1).<\/p>\n With regard to applications filed with WIPO, except for Germany, applications related to \u201ccomputing technology\u201d are filed by the countries mentioned above. China and South Korea have filed quite a number of applications in \u201cdigital communication\u201d.
